Private Islands Real Estate Private Islands are available all over the world, in fact there are many hundreds of Islands for sale worldwide at any one time. Prices range from under a million dollars to tens if not hundreds of millions. Buying an Island can have many unforeseen hazards and as with any purchase involving large sums of your hard earned cash, do your homework and employ professionals for advice. (If it sounds too good to be true!) To survive on your newly acquired Island you’ll need power, water and transportation, all part of an important infrastructure prior to living your Island dream. Basic Water desalination units can be purchased for about $25,000 USD and the diesel generator to run it will cost a further $25,000 USD. 20 gallons of diesel a day will keep your island powered 24-7 and produce about 15kws, enough for water desalination and sufficient electricity to run a small villa. Solar and wind turbines are an expensive alternative as long periods without sun or wind require large scale battery storage. (The sun doesn’t even shine in the Bahamas at 2:00am) Replacing large battery banks every four years is very expensive and not Eco Friendly! Transportation to and from your Island will depend on how far you are from the nearest mainland and what support is available on that mainland. For example you may need to ship from the USA to the Bahamas, then over land by truck it to your mainland dock before shipping it again across sea to your Private Cay. ("Cay" is the name of a small Island in the Bahamas, pronounced "key") All these additional costs need to be accounted for before commencing your dream island project. Government Permissions and planning are also a big factor in many parts of the world, check this carefully with a local Attorney before starting. Clear property title is another important factor, are you buying Freehold, Leasehold, maybe its actually Nohold! It could be that its Government Crown Land or even Shared Generation Land, get it checked carefully by a local surveyor. An easier, safer and less expensive alternative to buying a completely undeveloped Island is to buy into an already developing Island Resort, all the benefits without all the headaches. You can share the cost of running the Island by just paying a modest monthly maintenance fee. Enjoy a perfect, peaceful environment away from all the pollution and noise, all the benefits of living on your very own secluded Private Island, but without all that expense and aggravation. |
